"Launching" With Friends_Marshall Salon Services

" The most important things in life aren't things"-Anthony D'Angelo. Ill bet you could read into that quote a million different ways. To me this means the most important things in life arent things, they are people. Surround yourself with good people and GREAT things happen.

On June 27 after a long anticipated wait we launched Surface with Marshall Salon Services in Dixon, Il! On behalf of myself and the rest of my family, we couldnt be happier! We have known and respected the Marshall's as friends and business partners for quite some time and feel extremely honoroured to have thier support along with thier dynamic team of Store Managers, staff, and salon consultants. Lets not forget the "warehouse crew" who take great pride in getting Surface to our salons in time!

Following our launch with the Marshall team we were blessed to spend an afternoon with our one of a kind group of Surface Artist's who have done a fabulous job in getting Surface off to a great start with our Surface Store Blitz's!

Surface’s Welcome to Earth Week 2009: Green Evolution
We could change the world tomorrow if all the millions of people
around the world acted the way they believe.
April 22nd is Earth Day. A day both of celebration and appreciation for our earth and of the environmental movement's successes thus far; as well as an excellent opportunity to raise our awareness levels and the awareness of others to what we can do in our daily lives that will determine whether our world will become a safer, better place in which to live or fails to support life all together. In this regard we must face a fact; salons are major energy consumers and chemical polluters. Are we able to erase the large carbon foot print that our profession leaves? No. However we do have the ability to make product and consumption choices that will greatly reduce the size of our footprint. What may seem like ‘little things’ add up to be ‘big things’. Please take the time to read Surface ‘Profitability In A Green World’ and share this information with others. We owe it to the children of our earth to take personal responsibility in our actions to leave the earth a better place than we found it.

It is who we are and how we live with the awareness, responsibility and process of doing what is right. Knowing that little things don’t mean a lot they mean everything!

- Plastics, paper, glass, magazines, color tubes. Contact your city for recycling services. Keep bins convenient.

Reduce:
- Energy: - compact fluorescent lights (last 10x longer and use 66% less energy than

incandescent bulbs and natural lighting!
- automated thermostats and lights. Every degree you lower your heat in the 60 – 70 F range you’ll save 5% on heating costs (same for cooling)
- turning your computer OFF at night saves an estimated $75 per year.
- turn lights and tools off when not needed, use low volt appliances,
- maintain heating/cooling equipment save 10%

- Water: - turn off when not in use, use ultra low flush toilets and water efficient washing machines. Cold water laundry (salon of 3 saves $1,500 / year)

- Waste: - print two sided, adjust margins to .75” = 4.75% less paper (NA = 30M trees)
- email marketing whenever possible
- please consider the environment before printing your e-mail
- use refillable water bottles instead of bottled water, use reusable coffee mugs
- use one towel per hair cut client

Choose:
- Earth friendly, natural, organic easy biodegradable hair care and skin products with sustainably harvested ingredients. Good choices care for your personal health as well as the environment as these products are rinsed down the drain!

It's ALL about "GREATNESS"! America's Beauty Show Chicago

We have just returned from the beautiful city of Chicago where we spent three fabulous days at America's Beauty Show!

America's Beauty show, formerly known as the Midwest Beauty show has come quite a long way in my eyes since I first attended back in 1999. Hairstylist from all around the world were there to discover something GREAT! They seemed more driven than ever before to find the highest quality products, tools, and education.

I believe hairdressers are an amazing breed of individuals. Last month I blogged about how amazed I was to see a sold out hair show in a time of financial crisis! I think hairdressers just know the 'jig is up'! They/we know that today if you want to achieve GREAT results in your business, you have to give GREAT service and to provide great service you need to top it off with GREAT products and GREAT tools! It's a spiral effect if you will. The beauty industry is not scared to do thier part in saving the economy!

Strangley enough I sat next to a financial specialist for a major bank chain on my flight to Chicago. He was saying that there were some major decisions being made on qualifications for who could get loans these days, etc.. and I told him my opionion.. I said, "if you want to know the truth the people to 'put your money on' are those in the beauty business"! "There has never been a better time for hairdressers to build there business, or even start a new one! People today may not be running out to buy a new car but they will spend to make themselves feel good for the moment with a great haircut, color, products, or spa service.. We know where its at!" He said he'd keep that in mind for his next team meeting ;).

Marshalls Expressions Show March 7,8,9 was AMAZING!

Hello Surface Bloggers!

Last weekend was an amazing weekend spent in Oakbrook, Il for the Marshall Expressions show hosted every March by the Marshall Salon Service Team!

In my years of attending hairshows both as an attendee and as an exhibitor this particular show will forever stand in mind as one of the BEST shows ever! There were many things that led me to that response that I would love to share with you!

#1- Marshall Salon Services http://www.4mss.com/ for making no compromises when it came to customer service!

#2- An unbeleiveable group of Surface Artists! Jennifer Pierret, Jackie Grund, Brandi Weber, Jessica Zimmerman, Becky Schweitzer, Patty Cook, Patty Pumfrey, Kelly Hartt & Amber Challand. I have never seen a group work so fluidly together with such a passion for making the world a better place :)

#3- Last but not least!- The Stylists who came to this show! In a tough economy it blew my mind to see a sold out show and your drive to better yourselves through education!

In today's economy it is not about 'Up Selling' your Clients.. it is all about 'Up Serving' your clients. We hope all of you have been able to implement many of your new hot tips learned through our Surface Classroom and team and Congratulations to all of you who purchased one of our Surface Art Tools!

Expressions Surface Classes started with bang with a Saturday night Mainstage Extravagnza, followed up with full classrooms Sunday & Monday featuring Cutting, Color Placement, and Business Building. Ending the day Monday with a Hands On Cutting Workshop with 100 stylists who attended the show!

Purify_TriKnot Updo

Learn the easy steps to the Surface ‘Purify’, deep hair purification treatment with Wayne (4 minutes). Surface Art Team Artist Kimberlee Callaway shares her quick ‘Tri-Knot’ updo technique (8 minutes)! Following the Purify cleansing, we use Baba Hydrating Masque for 60 seconds, mist in Trinity Repair Tonic and then prep the hair with Reflect Gel and Bliss Smoothing Cream. Once dry, the hair is set on Velcro rollers using Impulse as a thermal setting spray. After taking the rollers out, Kimberlee works Baba Hydrating Gloss through the hair and does her magic with the knots! Theory Finishing Spray is used for final detailing!

OUR FIRST SURFACE ARTIST TRAININGS JANUARY 11-13 & 18-20TH!

Our first Surface Artist training(s) hosted January 11-13 in Dixon,Il (bottom pic)and January 18-20 in Saskatoon, SK, Canada (top pic) have left us with the beginnings of a BRILLIANT Education team filled with vibrant, talented stylist's from all over North America!

Our trainings were hosted by Surface President Wayne Grund & Surface Education Director Rebecca Grund.
